Though not a dancer herself, Dishnow had a strong passion for the arts and hired Beth Provencher as the studio’s Artistic Director. The original studio was located on the upper level of the Downtown Plaza before relocating first to a remodeled racquetball court at the Crystal Lake Community Center and later to the upstairs of the historic MichCon Building (now Stephenson Court), all under Dishnow’s ownership. From the start, the studio offered a wide range of dance styles—including jazz, modern, Middle Eastern dance, and tap—but ballet remained its foundation. In 1991, Dishnow passed the torch, selling the studio to Beth Provencher, Kelly Lutey, and her daughter, Jodi. It was around a café table, joined by Provencher’s parents, that the trio envisioned a new chapter and a new name: Northern Michigan Dance Academy. Under Provencher’s artistic leadership, the tradition of staging The Nutcracker each year began—fulfilling her lifelong dream and establishing a cherished community tradition. In 1997, the Academy opened a custom-built studio on John McNeil Drive, designed specifically for dancers. Shortly after, the Dickinson Ballet Company was formed to support students pursuing ballet at an advanced level. Nearly a decade later, the studio relocated to its current home: a beautiful, loft-style space in downtown Iron Mountain on Hughitt Street. Lutey continued co-directing until her retirement in 2018. In 2020, Katie Roell became the proud owner of Northern Michigan Dance Academy, continuing the legacy laid by Dishnow, Provencher, and Lutey. Today, NMDA is a ballet-only school committed to instilling a lifelong love and appreciation for the art of dance. As a former lead in several of our full-length productions—including Belle in Beauty and the Beast, Ursula in The Little Mermaid and Sugar Plum Fairy in The Nutcracker—Anja leads with both technical excellence and heartfelt artistry. Known for her strong work ethic, leadership, and ability to connect with dancers of all ages, Anja creates a supportive and encouraging environment in the classroom. She has a gift for helping young dancers feel seen, capable, and confident—qualities she exemplified throughout her time as both a student and assistant teacher at NMDA. Anja is currently pursuing her education to become a Nurse Aesthetician. A Memphis native, Kasha trained and performed with Ballet Memphis and Regional Tennessee Ballet, dancing roles in The Nutcracker, Sleeping Beauty, and Cinderella, including the lead of Clara at the Memphis Orpheum. Kasha holds a degree in Human Development with a Montessori specialization and is certified through Kripalu Yoga and IIN. Her teaching journey spans from Memphis to Hawaii. She then studied at Creighton University with Professor Roche and Lynn Nevin where she was a member of the ballet company "A Company of Dancers" and at the University of Nebraska in Omaha focusing on children's dance instruction and studying Modern Dance where she was principal dancer and choreographer for "The Moving Company". Beth continued her dance education at the University of Salt Lake City where she studied with renowned instructors Joan Woodbury and Shirley Ririe specializing in children's dance and dance for the severely mentally challenged as well as intensive ballet instruction with Ballet West and at the University of South Florida studying the Vaganova Ballet Method with Victoria Rockhill Schneider from the Harod Conservatory. She also attended workshop intensives with Vivian Tomlinson from South Africa and Lance Westergard from New York City and Joffrey Ballet in Chicago, as well as, teacher training at the American Ballet Theater and with Russian Ballet Master Valery Lantratov. As they progress in their training, they will be promoted to more difficult exercises and choreography when teachers deem they are ready. In Grande, dancers will develop their classical ballet skills in a required two classes per week. Grande ballet training includes more challenging combinations emphasizing flexibility, precision, and attention to detail, musicality, increased artistry, and correct classical technique. As dancers develop finesse in incorporating multiple facets of their training, the difficulty increases. Grande dancers focus on pointe work and learn to appreciate the many styles of ballet enhancing their knowledge of the art.
